Soft cover in black comb binding; this is one of a total of approximately 15 original self published manuscripts which were made by Mimi Gather containing copies of the many letters she shared with Thomas Merton. There are also numerous unique communications with Mimi surrounding the passing of Merton. The manuscripts were made for members of her direct family as stated in her introduction "This book is dedicated to all the descendents of beloved Mimi with the fervant hope that her fond friendship with Father Louis will bring to you the same comfort and solice which she found in his letters, notes and memorabilia." There is also a personal, original note by mimi dated and signed October 24, 1977.

This item is a draft letter typed by the secretary of Dr. Izod Bennett - it is not known whether or not it was eventually sent to Merton. Dr. Bennett was Owen Merton's personal physician and became guardian of Thomas Merton after his father's death. He was displeased with Tom's wild life while at Cambridge and it was he who recommended that Tom return to his maternal grandparents in America. In this letter Mr. Cresswell critcizes Tom for how he poorly represents the Bennetts in his autobiography. In one line he writes, "...I used to dread the sound of your name.

Print; from an original painting by Br. Robert Lentz, Franciscan Friar whose innovative icons are known around the world. He is a member of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Both Buddhist and Christian symbolism are combined in this icon, to express the way Merton reconciled the two spiritual traditions in his own life. His raised right hand represents "fear not", and his left calls upon the earth to bear witness that he has overcome temptation. The Greek inscription by his head reads "Holy Thomas." He wears the Cistercian cowl. This print has been signed by Br. Robert Lentz on February 15, 2007.

Unbound untrimmed pages. Signed by the artist (Gerhard Marcks); these sheets make up all four of Gerhard Marcks's expressionistic wood engravings, as well as his wood-engraved title-page, for James Laughlin's 1957 edition of Thomas Merton's The Tower of Babel. The sheets may have been page proofs for this work. The illustrations are printed in black on two sizes of paper, one measuring 14 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches and the other approximately 12 by 9 inches. Gerhard Marcks was a German artist and sculptor who, in 1919, joined Walter Gropius at the Staatliches Bauhaus, where he was put in charge of the Bauhaus pottery in Dornburg. In the 1930s his artwork was denounced and confiscated by the Nazis, two of his pieces being shown in an exhibition of "Degenerate Art." But he continued to work, and in the 50s was the recipient of two prestigious German art awards. The Tower of Babel is considered among the most beautiful productions ever done by Laughlin's legendary New Directions publishing house.

The photo was recieved, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley, who received it from Merton Trier, first cousin of Thomas Merton. John Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.

Original watercolor landscape painting by Owen Merton (father of Thomas Merton); initialed and dated by the Owen "9/4/28". This is one of his later works as he died in 1931 of a brain tumor and was incapacitated some time before then. It was received by the most recent owner from Merton Trier, Thomas Merton's first cousin. On the back of the item are faint pencil markings by the original owner (Edmond? Atkinson) who was a friend of Owen and Ruth Merton from New Zealand and attended their wedding. There also appears to be a faint signature of Owen on the back of the item. The artwork was recieved, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley, who received it from Merton Trier, first cousin of Thomas Merton. John Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.

This item contains two original black on black silkscreen (or lithograph?) prints (#9 & #10 - both stamped and numbered) from an edition of 250 - both protected in original numbered folders with rice-paper protection slips. Merton and Reinhardt were friends in Columbia and continued to be so after Merton became a monk. In 1957 Merton requested and received an original black on black painting from Reinhardt to aid in his prayer life. In a journal entry of November 17, Merton described the painting, “Almost invisible cross on a black background. As though immersed in darkness and trying to emerge from it . . . You have to look hard to see the cross. One must turn away from everything else and concentrate on the picture as though peering through a window into the night . . . I should say a very ‘holy’ picture—helps prayer—an ‘image’ without features to accustom the mind at once to the night of prayer—and to help one set aside trivial and useless images that wander into prayer and spoil it.” - from Cunningham, Lawrence S. Original drawing by the artist; seems to demonstrate the influence Merton had on Reinhardt, with the 2 crosses depicted in this drawing. This item is similar to a piece sold at the Woodward Gallery in New York City, from an exhibition of Reinhardt's drawings held on November 8 - December 27, 2008. This piece was brought to, and examined by, John Woodward (Gallery Director) on June 11, 2013. At that time, and with limited provenance accompanying the item, it was confirmed to most likely be an authentic drawing by Reinhardt - paper, size, style, signature and subject all conform with know articles, and especially those sold during the exhibition at the Woodward Gallery. 2008 exhibition documents and titles of all pieces displayed at that exhibition accompany this item, including images of the similar item to this one from that exhibition.

This is a typed letter by Abbot James Fox to Nicholas ---. In it the Abbot responds to a request for info regarding monastic life. This letter came inserted into the Merton book "Waters of Siloe" (1949) in a home-made jacket protector. It also includes the monastic booklet "The Ideal of the Cistercian Life" (1952) which is referred to in the letter from Abbot Fox. It also includes a article written by Merton titled "The White Pebble" regarding his conversion. This article is from the periodical "Sign" from July, 1950. It also includes an original black and white drawing of what appears to be a monk/clergy.

Cloth with "Thomas Merton" printed on cover. Colophon indicates permission for printing granted in 1956. OCLC/Worldcat locates only two confirmed copies. According to a note by Carolyn Reading Hammer, wife of Victor Hammer, 54 copies were printed - of which Merton received 50 copies and Hammer retained four (info retrieved from Worldcat). This copy is likely 1 of the 4 kept by Hammer. It was bound by Carolyn Hammer bound in the late 1990s before the printing of Four French Poems. "I remember several unbound things from The Anvil Press and the Stamperia del Santuccio being cased one way or another in the late 1990s. Several different papers were used, but every book had the same material on the spines, as on your copy." (Paul Holbrook) This item is not listed in Dell'Isola, but is item 2.836 in Breit and Daggy and is listed in the title finder of Burton's bibliography. The only other place where it has been published is in Convivium 2 in Italian as "Preghiera al sacro cuore". An exceptionally uncommon Merton item.

Pax was a "magazine" of poetry and art in which the work was the free contribution of the artists themselves "as their way of working toward an appreciation of the ideal of an enduring peace: the work of justice, the fruit of love".
