Notes Original photograph of Thomas Merton sitting in front of a book shelf while at St. Bonaventure College, Olean, NY; photo was taken by his brother John Paul Merton between the summer of 1940 and 1941 likely, as described on page 335-336 in Seven Storey Mountain, when John Paul was returning from his trip to Mexico. The photo was recieved, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley, who received it from Merton Trier, first cousin of Thomas Merton. John Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.

Notes This item is file folder containing the following: - approximately 14 original photos of John Paul Merton. - approximately 4 original photos taken by John Paul Merton. - approximately 2 original photos and 2 original letters written by Margaret May (wife of John Paul Merton). One of the 2 photos is an original wedding photo. - a photocopy of the original "Last Will and Testament" of John Paul Merton. - there is also a separate file for Eric George Hadingham, who was with John Paul Merton on the raft after being shot down in enemy waters during WWII. Hadingham survived and was rescued while John Paul died before rescuers arrived. This file contains numerous photos of Hadingham (during and just after the rescue) as well as letters of correspondence with John Stanley where he relays the exact events of the crash, the passing of John Paul Merton and the rescue of the survivors. - dozens of original letters, newspaper clippings, and photocopies from friends, colleagues and libraries etc. related to John Paul Merton. This item was received, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley, who presumably received at least part of this file from Merton Trier, first cousin of Thomas Merton. John Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.
