The Advent Mystery / mimeograph Place Published: Privately printed at Gethsemani (Trappist, Kentucky)
Notes
Mimeograph; text on recto only. This item appeared in the December 1963 Worship Magazine and published in Seasons of Celebration (1965) as "Advent: Hope or Delusion?". This mimeograph is part of a larger set of mimeographs that was obtained from the convent of Saint Helena at Vails Gate, New York. One of the sister's there had met with Merton with a few others while she resided at a sister house at Versailles, Kentucky (this meeting was noted in "The School of Charity" on page 198 and in "Dancing in the Waters of Life - Journal #5" on page 40). From that meeting the convent was put on Merton's mailing list and received numerous mimeographs in the 1960s - some of which are housed in this collection. Some of the publication information of these mimeographs was obtained with the kind participation of Patricia Burton, noted Merton bibliographer.

The Alaskan Journal of Thomas Merton - presentation copy Place Published: Isla Vista, California
Publisher
Turkey Press
Number of Pages
67 pages
Edition
Special, limited, deluxe publisher's presentation copy - #2 of 4. Short Title: The Alaskan Journal of Thomas Merton - presentation copy
Notes
Cloth in slipcase. Special limited, deluxe edition - publisher's presentation copy numbered 2 of only 4 copies in total. Original Scholco and Japanese linen and fine slipcase, covered by a relief print of a photograph taken by Merton in Alaska. This book came from the collection of poet, publisher, designer, photographer and essayist Jonathan Williams. Williams and Merton were acquaintances and regularly corresponded between 1965-1971. Williams visited Gethsemani Abbey in January of 1967 with Guy Davenport and Ralph Eugene Meatyard. A wonderful photographic portrait of Merton (taken by Williams) can be found in William's book "Portrait Photographs". Another nice association is that Turkey Press also published a book of Jonathan Williams. (Captain's Bookshelf)

First hard cover edition - signed by Merton and Dom James Fox Short Title: The Ascent to Truth - signed
Notes
Cloth and dust jacket; this item is inscribed and signed by Merton and Dom James Fox (Abbot of Gethsemani at the time). Merton inscribes, "To Rev. Mother M. Carmelita O.S.B., with my prayers and best wishes. In Jesus and Mary, F.M. Louis O.C.S.O", while Fox writes, "To dearest Mother M. Carmelita O.S.B., Courage, grit, love, trust, in gratitude and with affection and an assurance of prayer, Dom James Fox O.C.S.O., Abbot of Gethsemani". Fox also stamped the words "All for Jesus thru Mary with a smile" above his signature (which he commonly did). The recipient of this book may have been Mother M. Carmelita Hartman, who in the early 1930s, was Superior General of the then newly formed Union of the Sisters of Mercy in America. (Ref. Loome)
