Title
Prayer and Wholeness Place Published: Trappist / The Abbey of Gethsemani
Notes
This item is a typed transcript of an homily Merton gave at a Mass in the small chapel at Gethsemani on 29 May 1968, presumably transcribed and prepared by a party present on the occasion. It is not referenced under this title in Dell'Isola or Burton. This mimeograph represents one of numerous mimeographs acquired from Bob Bonazzi, John Howard Griffin's literary executor - and Griffin's widow's then second husband - a few years after the main Griffin manuscript archive was purchased from them (which is now at Columbia). The mimeos and typescripts from this collection represent a separate transaction from the acquisition of the Griffin archive, as the items had either been sent to R. Bonazzi directly by Merton or his representatives, or perhaps they were duplicated items already in the Griffin archive. (William Reese Company - Rare Books and Manuscripts)

Edition
First hard cover limited edition (1 of 4) Short Title: Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Notes
Cloth with "Thomas Merton" printed on cover. Colophon indicates permission for printing granted in 1956. OCLC/Worldcat locates only two confirmed copies. According to a note by Carolyn Reading Hammer, wife of Victor Hammer, 54 copies were printed - of which Merton received 50 copies and Hammer retained four (info retrieved from Worldcat). This copy is likely 1 of the 4 kept by Hammer. It was bound by Carolyn Hammer bound in the late 1990s before the printing of Four French Poems. "I remember several unbound things from The Anvil Press and the Stamperia del Santuccio being cased one way or another in the late 1990s. Several different papers were used, but every book had the same material on the spines, as on your copy." (Paul Holbrook) This item is not listed in Dell'Isola, but is item 2.836 in Breit and Daggy and is listed in the title finder of Burton's bibliography. The only other place where it has been published is in Convivium 2 in Italian as "Preghiera al sacro cuore". An exceptionally uncommon Merton item.

Pre Benedictine Monachism / Series 1 / Rufinus, Cassian, St. Pachomius, St. Basil etc. / mimeograph Place Published: Privately printed at Gethsemani (Trappist, Kentucky)
Notes
Mimeograph; text on recto and verso. This manuscript is published as "Pre-Benedictine Monasticism: Initiation into the Monastic Tradition" (2006). This mimeograph is part of a larger set of mimeographs that was obtained from the convent of Saint Helena at Vails Gate, New York. One of the sister's there had met with Merton with a few others while she resided at a sister house at Versailles, Kentucky (this meeting was noted in "The School of Charity" on page 198 and in "Dancing in the Waters of Life - Journal #5" on page 40). From that meeting the convent was put on Merton's mailing list and received numerous mimeographs in the 1960s - some of which are housed in this collection. Some of the publication information of these mimeographs was obtained with the kind participation of Patricia Burton, noted Merton bibliographer.

This is the original printed prospectus/announcement for the Pax periodical. Pax was a "magazine" of poetry and art in which the work was the free contribution of the artists themselves "as their way of working toward an appreciation of the ideal of an enduring peace: the work of justice, the fruit of love". Pax was edited and published by Robert Lax (close friend to Merton) from the offices of Jubilee magazine starting in the mid-1950’s to the early 1960’s and was revived for a few minor issues in the 1980’s. This item is part of a portfolio in this collection of Pax items that contains the following:
