Year 1937
Title Original 1937 Columbian Yearbook Place Published: New York
Number of Pages 224 pages.
Edition First hard cover edition - inscribed and signed by Hailpern to his parents. Short Title: Original 1937 Columbian Yearbook
Notes Cloth; this item is dedicated to Merton's mentor Mark Van Doren, and inscribed by Hailparn to his mother and father in gratitude. Merton and Hailparn are co-claimants (with two others) of the copyright for the contents. As would be expected, Merton, as a member of the editorial staff and several organizations, features in a number of photographs, and several cartoons explicitly credited to him are included (approximately 30 appearances in all). He is denoted the "best writer" of the Class of 1937, and features prominently in the class Hall of Fame. One might also assume the great likelihood that Merton might have participated in the composition and editing of some of the text not specifically credited to others. Merton's friend, Robert Lax, also features prominently in the yearbook. This published book predates Merton's vows by five years and his first book by eight years. This book accompanies the 2 original hand-written letters by Merton to Hailpern concerning the creation of this yearbook (see "Original hand-written letter #1 & #2 by Thomas Merton with envelop" for details).

Title Original draft of a letter addressed to Tom Merton Place Published: Twickenham, Middx.
Notes This item is a draft letter typed by the secretary of Dr. Izod Bennett - it is not known whether or not it was eventually sent to Merton. Dr. Bennett was Owen Merton's personal physician and became guardian of Thomas Merton after his father's death. He was displeased with Tom's wild life while at Cambridge and it was he who recommended that Tom return to his maternal grandparents in America. In this letter Mr. Cresswell critcizes Tom for how he poorly represents the Bennetts in his autobiography. In one line he writes, "...I used to dread the sound of your name.

Author Artist: Reinhardt, Ad
Year 1946
Title Original Drawing / Symetrical Male Figure
Notes Original drawing by the artist; seems to demonstrate the influence Merton had on Reinhardt, with the 2 crosses depicted in this drawing. This item is similar to a piece sold at the Woodward Gallery in New York City, from an exhibition of Reinhardt's drawings held on November 8 - December 27, 2008. This piece was brought to, and examined by, John Woodward (Gallery Director) on June 11, 2013. At that time, and with limited provenance accompanying the item, it was confirmed to most likely be an authentic drawing by Reinhardt - paper, size, style, signature and subject all conform with know articles, and especially those sold during the exhibition at the Woodward Gallery. 2008 exhibition documents and titles of all pieces displayed at that exhibition accompany this item, including images of the similar item to this one from that exhibition.
