Easter Homily for Argus Communications / mimeograph Place Published: Trappist / The Abbey of Gethsemani
Notes
This item is not indexed in either Dell'Isola or Burton and appears to be an unpublished homily given by Merton. This mimeograph represents one of numerous mimeographs acquired from Bob Bonazzi, John Howard Griffin's literary executor - and Griffin's widow's then second husband - a few years after the main Griffin manuscript archive was purchased from them (which is now at Columbia). The mimeos and typescripts frpm this collection represent a separate transaction from the acquisition of the Griffin archive, as the items had either been sent to R. Bonazzi directly by Merton or his representatives, or perhaps they were duplicated items already in the Griffin archive. (William Reese Company - Rare Books and Manuscripts)

Eight Freedom Songs / mimeograph Place Published: Privately printed at Gethsemani (Trappist, Kentucky)
Notes
Mimeograph; text on recto only. This item is referred to in "Road to Joy" (page 62) in a letter to Aunt Kit where Merton says, "I am even now writing some songs ["Eight Freedom Songs"] for a negro singer [Robert Lawrence Williams] to sing in a concert that is supposed to help the civil rights movement". This mimeograph is part of a larger set of mimeographs that was obtained from the convent of Saint Helena at Vails Gate, New York. One of the sister's there had met with Merton with a few others while she resided at a sister house at Versailles, Kentucky (this meeting was noted in "The School of Charity" on page 198 and in "Dancing in the Waters of Life - Journal #5" on page 40). From that meeting the convent was put on Merton's mailing list and received numerous mimeographs in the 1960s - some of which are housed in this collection. Some of the publication information of these mimeographs was obtained with the kind participation of Patricia Burton, noted Merton bibliographer.

Elegy for the Monastary Barn
Notes
This is an original, single page mimeograph of the poem by Merton - note the incorrect spelling of the word "monastery" in the title. It was recieved, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley, who presumably received it from Merton, or perhaps from Merton Trier, first cousin of Thomas Merton (John Stanley received numerous items from Merton Trier, a personal friend). John Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.

Expansive Catholicism: Ecumenical Perceptions of Thomas Merton
Journal
Religion in Life
Volume
Volume 48
Notes
Soft cover; this item has been received with gratitude from E. Glenn Hinson, friend of Thomas Merton. It is one of numerous items received from Hinson including 13 mimeographs which he received directly from Thomas Merton in the 1960s. Included in this group are mimeographs by Merton of unpublished works such as Notes on Art and Worship, as well as conference essays such as Conferences on the Rule of St. Benedict, and a Choir Novitiate copy from 1959 of Selections on Prayer. This collection of items represent an important first look at what Merton was working on later in his life, representing his writing before publication. Perhaps in the order of 100 copies of each essay were mimeographed and distributed to friends and acquaintences.
