Cloth; this item is dedicated to Merton's mentor Mark Van Doren, and inscribed by Hailparn to his mother and father in gratitude. Merton and Hailparn are co-claimants (with two others) of the copyright for the contents. As would be expected, Merton, as a member of the editorial staff and several organizations, features in a number of photographs, and several cartoons explicitly credited to him are included (approximately 30 appearances in all). He is denoted the "best writer" of the Class of 1937, and features prominently in the class Hall of Fame. One might also assume the great likelihood that Merton might have participated in the composition and editing of some of the text not specifically credited to others. Merton's friend, Robert Lax, also features prominently in the yearbook. This published book predates Merton's vows by five years and his first book by eight years. This book accompanies the 2 original hand-written letters by Merton to Hailpern concerning the creation of this yearbook (see "Original hand-written letter #1 & #2 by Thomas Merton with envelop" for details).

This is the second of two relatively early original letters from Merton, signed "Tom", to Alfred Hailparn, his co-editor of the 1937 number of THE 1937 COLUMBIAN, the Columbia University yearbook (see "Original hand written letter (#1) by Thomas Merton with envelope" for the other). This one concerns solicitations of advertisers for the yearbook: "...we are more earnest in getting prospects lined up than hopeful of getting any signatures on the dotted line as yet ... we are each going to work independently on a bunch of prospects that appear good to us ...." He inquires about the possibilities of making connections through Hailparn's father: " ... Far from being a question of advertising out of charity it would show certain advantages -- college men drink a lot of beer! ...". Intending to get a head start on yearbook production, Merton writes: "First & most important: tell Anne ____ to go to hell. It is too late now as we have signed up with White. I'm sorry you didn't get the card ... I took White's man along & got a number of swell shots around the place. Just wait until you see them! Furthermore I am going to make another trip up there with him & get a lot more: I want plenty of pictures of campus in the book & there are lots of swell old cuts too ... I am working 8 hours a day up at Radio City these days so I have not had much time to scout around myself. However - the time will come. As to engravers - they can wait ....". This letter comes originally from a collection of pieces by Mr. Robert MacGregor (New Directions staff member) to James Laughlin, publisher of New Directions. The envelop is addressed to Mr. George Freimarck and has typed on the back Merton's typed home address scratched out (presumably Merton no longer lived there at the time of sending) as "Tom F. Single sheet in folding cloth slipcase. To an unidentified "Dear John" [not John H. Griffin], in response to receipt of his poem and other matters. The poem "... has a nice feeling about it, lively, informal, casual but effective. The only criticism I would make is that your rhythm is monotonous. You need to learn how to break it up, vary it, change pace, pick up again and so on. That will come with reading of poetry and more practice. Hope your article got in Jubilee.
