Notes Original black and white photograph of a young Thomas Merton with two female friends while biking with a tennis racket in hand. The photo was taken while at "Fairlawn" in West Horsley, Surrey, a place where Merton spent time in his childhood. The woman on the far left of the photo is Gwynedd Merton Trier (Owen's sister). There are two copies of this photo present. The photo was recieved, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley, who received it from Merton Trier, first cousin of Thomas Merton. John Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.
