Title
Original letter (TLS) by Thomas Merton in envelope Place Published: New York
Notes
Single sheet letter on Columbia Review letterhead. This letter comes originally from a collection of pieces by Mr. Robert MacGregor (New Directions staff member) to James Laughlin, publisher of New Directions. The envelop is addressed to Mr. George Freimarck and has typed on the back Merton's typed home address scratched out (presumably Merton no longer lived there at the time of sending) as "Tom F. Merton, 50 Rushmore Avenue, Douglaston, L. I., N. Y.". The letter partially reads as follows: "COLUMBIA REVIEW: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY/ 405 JOHN JAY HALL ROBERT LAX editor ARTHUR ZAMPELLA BARRY ULANOV associates Dear George: ... I have been writing book reviews for the Herald Tribune 'Books', and for the Nation, and also doing free lance cartooning. I am taking my M.A. and writing a thesis on the Aesthetic Ideas in William Blake... Sincerely, Tom Merton " ( signed in dark blue ink with a period at the end and underlined).

Original letter (TLS) signed by Merton Place Published: Trappist, KY
Notes
Single sheet in folding cloth slipcase. To an unidentified "Dear John" [not John H. Griffin], in response to receipt of his poem and other matters. The poem "... has a nice feeling about it, lively, informal, casual but effective. The only criticism I would make is that your rhythm is monotonous. You need to learn how to break it up, vary it, change pace, pick up again and so on. That will come with reading of poetry and more practice. Hope your article got in Jubilee. It is a good idea to write. Don't be surprised if the first few times you don't immediately click, and don't expect all the editors to come a'runnin' right the first day. It takes time." In response to a query about his back, he replies that it is better but he has bursitis in his elbow, and "I hope it will pass off and I will be able to get back to some wood chopping." He mentions sending on a few things, include a Vietnamese translation of Seeds of Contemplation, noting "As to the Bibliography, don't rush. That is an ongoing project I believe!..." Merton closes: "God be with you always, in Christ, Tom Merton." From the collection of the James S. Copley Library, acquired as an element in a large private treaty joint purchase by William Reese Company and James Cummins Booksellers.

Easter Homily for Argus Communications / mimeograph Place Published: Trappist / The Abbey of Gethsemani
Notes
This item is not indexed in either Dell'Isola or Burton and appears to be an unpublished homily given by Merton. This mimeograph represents one of numerous mimeographs acquired from Bob Bonazzi, John Howard Griffin's literary executor - and Griffin's widow's then second husband - a few years after the main Griffin manuscript archive was purchased from them (which is now at Columbia). The mimeos and typescripts frpm this collection represent a separate transaction from the acquisition of the Griffin archive, as the items had either been sent to R. Bonazzi directly by Merton or his representatives, or perhaps they were duplicated items already in the Griffin archive. (William Reese Company - Rare Books and Manuscripts)

This mimeograph represents one of numerous mimeographs acquired from Bob Bonazzi, John Howard Griffin's literary executor - and Griffin's widow's then second husband - a few years after the main Griffin manuscript archive was purchased from them (which is now at Columbia). Notes
This item is an early photoduplicated, lightly corrected, typescript - perhaps circulated in this format rather than as one of Merton's characteristic mimeographs because of its intended purpose. This item appears to have not been published. This mimeograph represents one of numerous mimeographs acquired from Bob Bonazzi, John Howard Griffin's literary executor - and Griffin's widow's then second husband - a few years after the main Griffin manuscript archive was purchased from them (which is now at Columbia). The mimeos and typescripts from this collection represent a separate transaction from the acquisition of the Griffin archive, as the items had either been sent to R. Marxist Theory and Monastic Theoria / mimeograph Place Published: Trappist / The Abbey of Gethsemani
Notes
This item is perhaps the first printing of this discourse, no doubt prepared from a transcript or recording made on the occasion, a few hours before Merton's death. Not indexed in this form, or under this title, in Dell'Isola. Patricia Burton records it's first publication in 1970, in "A New Charter for Monasticism" - there are some rather significant textual and editorial variations to this mimeograph as compared to the published text. Cloth; association copy. Merton's companion to The Seven Storey Mountain, inscribed & signed by the book's editor as follows: "For Father Alfred J. Bonnett on the occasion of telling 'The Story of The Seven Storey Mountain' Fordham 8 Aug. '49 / Robert Giroux" . One of giants of 20th Century American publishing, Giroux first met Merton at Columbia University, where he was also classmates with John Berryman, Herman Wouk, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Lax, and the composer John Latouche. As editor at Harcourt, he discovered & brought out books by many of the great writers of the time, including The Seven Storey Mountain and The Waters of Siloe. He was hired away to work for Roger W. Straus, Jr. at Farrar & Straus in 1955, where he became a partner and, eventually, its chairman. It's believed that Giroux lectured on the subject SSM at Fordham University and that Alfred Bonnett was associated with Fordham's drama department.

Original mimeographed Easter Letter
Notes
Single sheet mimeograph printed on both sides. Merton often sent mimeographed greetings to friends and acquaintences as sending individual correspondence would be near impossible due to the volume of acquaintences he had. This Easter letter was sent at Easter 1968, the last year of his life. In it he discusses in detail the debate of that time about the validity of the monastic vocation and the rightness or wrongness of some of the practices of monks of that time. This item came with a collection of items from David Semon, who corresponded with Merton during the late 1960s. This item came to David Semon directly from Merton.

Original mimeographed Advent-Christmas letter (signed)
Notes
Original mimeographed Advent-Christmas letter (1967). One sheet, 2 sided and signed by Merton. Merton sent these mimeographed letters to his friends and acquaintences to account for the fact that sending indivudual Christmas greetings would be impossible due to the volume of acquaintences he had. In the mimeograph he speaks of his sorrow at the passing of friends Victor Hammer, Ad Reinhardt and John Slate. he also speaks of the renovated Abbey Church, difficulties with the volume of correspondence he receives, religious renewal and even comments on the Beatles. He also speaks of faith as being a lonely virtue, and of love as something that needs to be given as well as received.
