This item is a file folder containing the following: - approximately 15 original typed, and very insightful letters by Ed Rice (hand signed by Rice) - many making direct reference to his friend Thomas Merton. Letters are dated between 1974 and 1989 and most approximately 1 page in length. In one letter called Merton a "mystical iceberg; we only see the tip". - numerous copies of the letters of John Staney who corresponded with Rice over this time. This item was received, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley. Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.

Cloth in slipcase. Special limited, deluxe edition - publisher's presentation copy numbered 2 of only 4 copies in total. Original Scholco and Japanese linen and fine slipcase, covered by a relief print of a photograph taken by Merton in Alaska. This book came from the collection of poet, publisher, designer, photographer and essayist Jonathan Williams. Williams and Merton were acquaintances and regularly corresponded between 1965-1971. Williams visited Gethsemani Abbey in January of 1967 with Guy Davenport and Ralph Eugene Meatyard. A wonderful photographic portrait of Merton (taken by Williams) can be found in William's book "Portrait Photographs". Another nice association is that Turkey Press also published a book of Jonathan Williams. (Captain's Bookshelf)

Connected to the poem by Merton, Conversation Morum, and including a Lance Hidy 12 Photographs Portfolio Set (8 black and white and 4 color Cibachrome 8 x 10 inches photographs, signed on the verso and mounted in 12 x 14-inch over-mats).
There were 200 numbered copies and 50 lettered copies made - this is letter DD. Enclosed in clamshell case.

This 5 volume set of scrap books contains journal articles, newspaper clippings, book announcements, written correspondence (memories of a few who knew Merton etc.) and photos related to the life of Thomas Merton. These scrap books were received with gratitude (December 30, 2013) from the private collection of Paul Turner Harris, who was a Merton admirer and personal friend of Dorothy Day and Catherine Doherty. He began assembling the information beginning in 1983 to present.

This extremely scarce item is the full run of the Poets of the Month series (complete with introductory pamphlet) containing 42 issues in original printed wraps (some illustrated) from 1941-1944. Each year is housed in a specially labelled slip cases (4 in all). For the first three years, 12 issues were published annually while in 1944, 6 issues were published (including Merton's poetry book). Each issue was printed by a different free press. Included are works by Thomas Merton (first book), M. Cowley, R. Eberhart, J. Berryman (first book), K. Patchen, Dylan Thomas, G. Barker, V. Nabokov, C. Aiken, D. Schwartz, C. Rakosi, J. M. Brinnin, E. Prokosch, W. C. Williams, F. T. Prince, W. Townley Scott, M. Van Doren, Hopkins, Rilke, etc. This collection comes from the personal library of James Laughlin, founder and publisher of New Directions, the press that printed this series (with his ex-libris sticker inside front cover of introductory pamphlet).

Soft cover; this is a prayer printed on one sheet, French-folded, to make four printable pages (8 total). This copy is inscribed by Thomas Merton: "Very gratefully and with the promise of special prayers in Christ Our Lord/ Fr. Louis Merton." Merton took the name Father Louis on entering the Abbey of Gethsemani. OCLC/Worldcat locates only two confirmed copies, none signed. According to a note by Carolyn Reading Hammer, wife of Victor Hammer, 54 copies were printed - of which Merton received 50 copies and Hammer retained four (info retrieved from Worldcat). This item is not listed in Dell'Isola, but is item 2.836 in Breit and Daggy and is listed in the title finder of Burton's bibliography. The only other place where it has been published is in Convivium 2 in Italian as "Preghiera al sacro cuore". An exceptionally uncommon Merton item.
