Title Dagboeknotities (1946-1952) uit Het Teken van Jona / manuscript
Notes Sof cover; Dutch language manuscript translation of "The Sign of Jonas" as translated by Stan Broos. The publication of the Dutch language book was never completed and Merton himself may have revealed why. Here is what Merton says in a letter to Fr Charles Dumont: "Thank you for your kind words about Jonas. It is a problematical book in the Order. Many have not liked it. I did not expect them to. Dom Leclercq thinks it will not be too well liked in Europe either. The Dutch publishers are afraid to bring out a translation. The book, they say, is not phlegmatic enough for Holland. In that case I shall have to resign myself to the loss of Holland, as I am not at all phlegmatic." Merton, Thomas; Hart, Patrick (1990-11-14). The School of Charity: The Letters Of Thomas Merton On Religious Renewal & Spiritual Direction (p. 67). Macmillan. Kindle Edition. Notes Soft cover pamphlet; this statement by Merton has just recently been discovered as part of the Manifesto - as discussed in an article by Monica Weiss, SSJ, in the Merton Seasonal, vol. 36, #1, Spring, 2011. The statement is in response to a letter by one of the editors of the pamphlet, Roger Moody, requesting a contributing statement by Merton. Merton sends the requested statement and also offers to write "something longer" in his support of the issue (which he did indeed draft but likely never got around to sending). This significant statement demonstrates Merton's sensitivity to issues of ecology and social justice when few others were doing so. Supporters noted include Jacques Maritain, Bertrand Russell and Albert Schweitzer. Only one known copy is located in the WorldCat database of Libraries.
