Soft cover in black comb binding; this is one of a total of approximately 15 original self published manuscripts which were made by Mimi Gather containing copies of the many letters she shared with Thomas Merton. There are also numerous unique communications with Mimi surrounding the passing of Merton. The manuscripts were made for members of her direct family as stated in her introduction "This book is dedicated to all the descendents of beloved Mimi with the fervant hope that her fond friendship with Father Louis will bring to you the same comfort and solice which she found in his letters, notes and memorabilia." There is also a personal, original note by mimi dated and signed October 24, 1977.

This item is a draft letter typed by the secretary of Dr. Izod Bennett - it is not known whether or not it was eventually sent to Merton. Dr. Bennett was Owen Merton's personal physician and became guardian of Thomas Merton after his father's death. He was displeased with Tom's wild life while at Cambridge and it was he who recommended that Tom return to his maternal grandparents in America. In this letter Mr. Cresswell critcizes Tom for how he poorly represents the Bennetts in his autobiography. In one line he writes, "...I used to dread the sound of your name.

This is the second of two relatively early original letters from Merton, signed "Tom", to Alfred Hailparn, his co-editor of the 1937 number of THE 1937 COLUMBIAN, the Columbia University yearbook (see "Original hand written letter (#1) by Thomas Merton with envelope" for the other). This one concerns solicitations of advertisers for the yearbook: "...we are more earnest in getting prospects lined up than hopeful of getting any signatures on the dotted line as yet ... we are each going to work independently on a bunch of prospects that appear good to us ...." He inquires about the possibilities of making connections through Hailparn's father: " ... Far from being a question of advertising out of charity it would show certain advantages -- college men drink a lot of beer! ...". This letter and the other are accompanied by the 1937 edition of The Columbian yearbook which was edited by Merton and Hailpern (with two others) and prominently features Merton in text, photos and cartoons (approx. 30 appearances in all). This is the first of two relatively early original letters from Merton, signed "Tom Merton" to Alfred Hailparn, his co-editor of the 1937 number of THE 1937 COLUMBIAN, the Columbia University yearbook (see "Original hand written letter (#2) by Thomas Merton with envelope" for the other). Intending to get a head start on yearbook production, Merton writes: "First & most important: tell Anne ____ to go to hell. It is too late now as we have signed up with White. I'm sorry you didn't get the card ... I took White's man along & got a number of swell shots around the place. Just wait until you see them! Furthermore I am going to make another trip up there with him & get a lot more: I want plenty of pictures of campus in the book & there are lots of swell old cuts too ... I am working 8 hours a day up at Radio City these days so I have not had much time to scout around myself. However - the time will come. As to engravers - they can wait ....". Single sheet letter on Columbia Review letterhead. This letter comes originally from a collection of pieces by Mr. Robert MacGregor (New Directions staff member) to James Laughlin, publisher of New Directions. The envelop is addressed to Mr. George Freimarck and has typed on the back Merton's typed home address scratched out (presumably Merton no longer lived there at the time of sending) as "Tom F. Merton, 50 Rushmore Avenue, Douglaston, L. I., N. Y.". The letter partially reads as follows: "COLUMBIA REVIEW: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY/ 405 JOHN JAY HALL ROBERT LAX editor ARTHUR ZAMPELLA BARRY ULANOV associates Dear George: ... I have been writing book reviews for the Herald Tribune 'Books', and for the Nation, and also doing free lance cartooning. Single sheet in folding cloth slipcase. To an unidentified "Dear John" [not John H. Griffin], in response to receipt of his poem and other matters. The poem "... has a nice feeling about it, lively, informal, casual but effective. The only criticism I would make is that your rhythm is monotonous. You need to learn how to break it up, vary it, change pace, pick up again and so on. That will come with reading of poetry and more practice. Hope your article got in Jubilee. It is a good idea to write. Don't be surprised if the first few times you don't immediately click, and don't expect all the editors to come a'runnin' right the first day. It takes time." In response to a query about his back, he replies that it is better but he has bursitis in his elbow, and "I hope it will pass off and I will be able to get back to some wood chopping." He mentions sending on a few things, include a Vietnamese translation of Seeds of Contemplation, noting "As to the Bibliography, don't rush. That is an ongoing project I believe!..." Merton closes: "God be with you always, in Christ, Tom Merton." From the collection of the James S. This item was received, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley. Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family.
