Notes This item is a file folder containing the following: From John Stanley (Novice under Merton): - approximately 9 original hand-written, signed, often poetic letters by Robert Lax. - 2 hand-written, signed letter by the sister of Robert Lax, Gladys Marcus. - numerous copies of the letters of John Stanley who corresponded with Lax over this time. The above items were received, with deepest gratitude, from John Stanley. Stanley was a monk at Gethsemani for a short time while Merton was also there, and spent much of his life researching and writing about Merton, his friends and his family. From Jim Forest (personal friend of Merton): - approximately 50 hand-written, signed, often dated letters/postcards/drawings by Robert Lax - numerous carbon copies of the letters of Jim Forest that were sent in correspondence with Lax The above items were received, with deepest gratitude, from Jim Forest directly. From William (Bill) Claire (editor of Voyages periodical - one full edition dedicated to Lax) - 2 hand-written letters from Lax. - 1 hand-written envelop addressed to William Claire from Lax (while in Zurich) - 1 photo of Robert Lax received with gratitude from Bill Claire. - 1 copy of "New World Writing" (1958) containing Robert Lax writing - an early pick-up of Lax by an anthology. - 1 hand-written 23 line letter from Emil Antonucci (editor of Journeyman Press who published numerous Lax books) addressed to Bill Claire related to the work of Robert Lax. - 1 hand-written 17 line letter with envelope from Dorothy Van Doren (wife of Mark Van Doren) and friend of Merton and Lax from post Columbia days. - 1 hand-written 22 line letter from Cathy Gatling (Managing Editor of Proteus Magazine), in part discussing doing a Lax book. - 1 hand-written 30 line letter from Claire McAllister (who contributed to Lax's Pax Magazine) in part discussing Lax as editor, "Gone seem the times when people like Bob Lax would knock till the poem was in his hands..." This item also contains: - 5 editions of Lax's high school newsletter, "The Newtown Lantern" - April 1931; June 1931; November 1931; May 1932; June 1932.
