This letter comes originally from a collection of pieces by Mr. Robert MacGregor (New Directions staff member) to James Laughlin, publisher of New Directions. The envelop is addressed to Mr. George Freimarck and has typed on the back Merton's typed home address scratched out (presumably Merton no longer lived there at the time of sending) as "Tom F. Merton, 50 Rushmore Avenue, Douglaston, L. I., N. Y.". The letter partially reads as follows: "COLUMBIA REVIEW: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY/ 405 JOHN JAY HALL ROBERT LAX editor ARTHUR ZAMPELLA BARRY ULANOV associates Dear George: ... I have been writing book reviews for the Herald Tribune 'Books', and for the Nation, and also doing free lance cartooning. I am taking my M.A. and writing a thesis on the Aesthetic Ideas in William Blake... Sincerely, Tom Merton " ( signed in dark blue ink with a period at the end and underlined).
