Dagboeknotities (1946-1952) uit Het Teken van Jona / manuscript
Notes
Sof cover; Dutch language manuscript translation of "The Sign of Jonas" as translated by Stan Broos. The publication of the Dutch language book was never completed and Merton himself may have revealed why. Here is what Merton says in a letter to Fr Charles Dumont: "Thank you for your kind words about Jonas. It is a problematical book in the Order. Many have not liked it. I did not expect them to. Dom Leclercq thinks it will not be too well liked in Europe either. The Dutch publishers are afraid to bring out a translation. The book, they say, is not phlegmatic enough for Holland. In that case I shall have to resign myself to the loss of Holland, as I am not at all phlegmatic." Merton, Thomas; Hart, Patrick (1990-11-14). The School of Charity: The Letters Of Thomas Merton On Religious Renewal & Spiritual Direction (p. 67). Macmillan. Kindle Edition. Thank you to bibliographer Patricia Burton who passed along information on this text.

First hard cover edition - signed by Merton and Dom James Fox Short Title: The Ascent to Truth - signed
Notes
Cloth and dust jacket; this item is inscribed and signed by Merton and Dom James Fox (Abbot of Gethsemani at the time). Merton inscribes, "To Rev. Mother M. Carmelita O.S.B., with my prayers and best wishes. In Jesus and Mary, F.M. Louis O.C.S.O", while Fox writes, "To dearest Mother M. Carmelita O.S.B., Courage, grit, love, trust, in gratitude and with affection and an assurance of prayer, Dom James Fox O.C.S.O., Abbot of Gethsemani". Fox also stamped the words "All for Jesus thru Mary with a smile" above his signature (which he commonly did). The recipient of this book may have been Mother M. Carmelita Hartman, who in the early 1930s, was Superior General of the then newly formed Union of the Sisters of Mercy in America. (Ref. Loome)

Original mimeographed Easter Letter
Notes
Single sheet mimeograph printed on both sides. Merton often sent mimeographed greetings to friends and acquaintences as sending individual correspondence would be near impossible due to the volume of acquaintences he had. This Easter letter was sent at Easter 1968, the last year of his life. In it he discusses in detail the debate of that time about the validity of the monastic vocation and the rightness or wrongness of some of the practices of monks of that time. This item came with a collection of items from David Semon, who corresponded with Merton during the late 1960s. This item came to David Semon directly from Merton.

Original mimeographed Advent-Christmas letter (signed)
Notes
Original mimeographed Advent-Christmas letter (1967). One sheet, 2 sided and signed by Merton. Merton sent these mimeographed letters to his friends and acquaintences to account for the fact that sending indivudual Christmas greetings would be impossible due to the volume of acquaintences he had. In the mimeograph he speaks of his sorrow at the passing of friends Victor Hammer, Ad Reinhardt and John Slate. he also speaks of the renovated Abbey Church, difficulties with the volume of correspondence he receives, religious renewal and even comments on the Beatles. He also speaks of faith as being a lonely virtue, and of love as something that needs to be given as well as received. Cold War Letters / mimeograph Place Published: Privately printed at The Abbey of Gethsemani (Trappist, Kentucky)
Notes
Original mimeograph in textured yellow card covers and bound in plastic comb binding. Although Merton was forbidden from publishing on the subject of war and peace, he did use the Abbey of Gethsemanis' mimeograph machine to write his views and circulate them among friends and acquaintances. This is one such mimeograph - less than 100 (probably around 85) were printed and distributed. This item is a part of a group of over 30 original mimeographs and offprints purchased from Merton bookdealer Jeannette Cantrell who received them from monk of Gethsemani Tom Zele. This group of items were obtained by Zele during the 1960s while living alongside Merton at the monastery.

Notes
Soft cover pamphlet; this statement by Merton has just recently been discovered as part of the Manifesto - as discussed in an article by Monica Weiss, SSJ, in the Merton Seasonal, vol. 36, #1, Spring, 2011. The statement is in response to a letter by one of the editors of the pamphlet, Roger Moody, requesting a contributing statement by Merton. Merton sends the requested statement and also offers to write "something longer" in his support of the issue (which he did indeed draft but likely never got around to sending). This significant statement demonstrates Merton's sensitivity to issues of ecology and social justice when few others were doing so. Supporters noted include Jacques Maritain, Bertrand Russell and Albert Schweitzer. Only one known copy is located in the WorldCat database of Libraries.
