Title
Monastic Vocation and the Background of Modern Secular Thought / mimeograph Place Published: Privately printed at Gethsemani (Trappist, Kentucky)
Notes
Mimeograph; text on recto and verso (see also a 2nd copy of this mimeograph in this collection where text is on recto only - both original documents). This item is roughly written at times, often in point form and appears to be a typed copy of Merton's notes for a discussion. Later became "Vocation and Modern Thought" in "Contemplation in a World of Action". This mimeograph is part of a larger set of mimeographs that was obtained from the convent of Saint Helena at Vails Gate, New York. One of the sister's there had met with Merton with a few others while she resided at a sister house at Versailles, Kentucky (this meeting was noted in "The School of Charity" on page 198 and in "Dancing in the Waters of Life - Journal #5" on page 40). From that meeting the convent was put on Merton's mailing list and received numerous mimeographs in the 1960s - some of which are housed in this collection. Some of the publication information of these mimeographs was obtained with the kind participation of Patricia Burton, noted Merton bibliographer.

Title
The Climate of Monastic Prayer / mimeograph Place Published: Trappist
Notes
Mimeograph; first soft cover edition. This title was first published in book form in 1969. There are major textual differences between this mimeograph and the expanded, published text. The mimeograph is much briefer and differs in sequence: the introduction and Chapters l-lV here are nearly identical to the corresponding portions of the book; Chapter V corresponds to Chapter Xl of the book; Chapter Vl to Chapter XlV of the book and Chapter Vll to Chapter XVl of the book. The mimeographed version ends after Chapter Vll.

Cold War Letters / mimeograph Place Published: Privately printed at The Abbey of Gethsemani (Trappist, Kentucky)
Notes
Original mimeograph in textured yellow card covers and bound in plastic comb binding. This copy was obtained from Clayton Barbeau who obtained it originally from his literary agent Naomi Burton Stone (also Mertons' literarty agent at the time). Although Merton was forbidden from publishing on the subject of war and peace, he did use the Abbey of Gethsemanis' mimeograph machine to write his views and circulate them among friends and acquaintances. This is one such mimeograph.

The Root of War
Number of Pages
4 (one oversized folded sheet)
Edition
First separate printing. Short Title: The Root of War
Notes
Criptic reprint of this essay from the October 1961 issue of "The Catholic Worker" - probably the first separtate printing. "The Root of War is Fear" was the first in a series of Catholic Worker articles by Merton criticizing the arms race and the Cold War. It appeared again later that year, in somewhat shortened form, in Merton's book "New Seeds of Contemplation". This unusual pamphlet printing, with title shortened to "The Root of War", most likely was published in 1961 and came from the personal library of John Beecher (1904-80), noted social protest poet and fine press publisher. Beecher also published "On Acquiring a Cistercian Breviary", a poem dedicated to Merton which is also a part of this collection.

Ways of Survival / Taoism Place Published: Privately printed at the Abbey of Gethsemani (Trappist, KY)
Notes
Original mimeograph. Although this item was not written by Merton it came as a part of a group of over 30 original Merton mimeographs and offprints purchased from Merton bookdealer Jeannette Cantrell who received them from monk of Gethsemani Tom Zele. This group of items were obtained by Zele during the 1960s while living alongside Merton at the monastery. It is likely that it was at least selected by Merton, noting the content and that it was a part of a larger group of Merton mimeographs.

Prayer and Wholeness Place Published: Trappist / The Abbey of Gethsemani
Notes
This item is a typed transcript of an homily Merton gave at a Mass in the small chapel at Gethsemani on 29 May 1968, presumably transcribed and prepared by a party present on the occasion. It is not referenced under this title in Dell'Isola or Burton. This mimeograph represents one of numerous mimeographs acquired from Bob Bonazzi, John Howard Griffin's literary executor - and Griffin's widow's then second husband - a few years after the main Griffin manuscript archive was purchased from them (which is now at Columbia). The mimeos and typescripts from this collection represent a separate transaction from the acquisition of the Griffin archive, as the items had either been sent to R. Bonazzi directly by Merton or his representatives, or perhaps they were duplicated items already in the Griffin archive. (William Reese Company - Rare Books and Manuscripts)
